Modifying spaces to improve family gathering

The Rostrevor house

is a traditional style home with classical detailing that was built in the early 1970s. The kitchen had been remodeled in the early 2000s, but the owner was ready for a cosmetic update to the kitchen & dining areas.

The homeowners’ children were in various stages of early adulthood & when thinking through their current (& future) needs as a family, we assessed the floor plan & made some modifications to improve flow, provide large gathering spaces, & inject functional storage to the family’s main entry point into the home. All this while staying within the home’s current footprint.

We shrunk the size of the existing formal dining, did away with a large eat-in kitchen area that served as a duplicate space with their existing formal dining. We also opened up the renovated kitchen area & adjacent hallway with dual arched openings. This improved sight lines throughout the spaces & added architectural interest. Square footage was reclaimed from a long-ish laundry for a new breakfast nook. The breakfast nook now serves as a quiet space for the homeowners to enjoy coffee or cozy up to work from home.

The kitchen is outfitted with workstation sink, integrated produce drawers & a large uninterrupted counter space under the new triple window (perfect for a family that often cooks together or for a large spread at a gathering).
